 Building Response Protocol

As an Administration Intern, I was tasked with developing guidelines for how our support personnel—comprising Admin, BHT, counselors, SROs, and RJ should respond in emergency situations. This process involved revisiting core principles to clearly define what qualifies as an emergency, ultimately leading us to identify two primary response categories: Safety Response and Medical Response. The creation of these protocols included outlining specific tasks that needed to be completed, as detailed in the document, as well as identifying the various roles required for effective response. We also established a comprehensive roles and responsibilities list to outline the necessary actions in the event of an emergency. Although this was a challenging endeavor, I am highly satisfied with the results, and since implementation, our environment has become a safer and more efficient environment.

Tornado, Fire & Hold Procedure

As part of my administration internship, I led the development of the Tornado & Fire Drill Safety Plan Overview to ensure our building met compliance requirements and that every staff member clearly understood their roles during emergency drills. I gathered district guidance, reviewed building floor plans, and interviewed safety leads to draft step‑by‑step procedures for both tornado and fire responses. I organized the plan into actionable components—pre‑drill notifications, classroom postings, specific evacuation/ shelter locations, staff responsibilities, and post‑drill debrief protocols—so teachers would have concise, accessible instructions to follow under stress.

 

I also established operational systems to keep the plan current and effective: a schedule for quarterly reviews, a protocol for distributing updates to staff several days before drills, and templates for classroom postings so procedures are uniform schoolwide. For implementation, I coordinated drill logistics, communicated timelines to teachers and support staff, and led post‑drill debriefs to collect feedback and adjust the plan. These steps improved readiness, clarified expectations, and created a sustainable cycle of practice and refinement for building safety.

Student Vandalism Investigation

During my administration internship, I took an active role in the bathroom vandalism investigation on the 3rd floor. Custodial staff alerted us to extensive damage and unsanitary conditions; I coordinated with the administrative team and the SRO to review camera footage, assist with student interviews, and document findings. I helped manage logistics during the investigation (securing the scene, arranging interviews, and communicating with custodial and facilities staff about the immediate safety and sanitation needs).

I also participated in planning next steps to address the operational impact: arranging temporary closure of the restroom, coordinating with custodial, district facilities, and plumbing teams for cleaning and repairs, and preparing messaging for staff and students about safety and facility availability. Throughout the process, I emphasized prevention strategies—student reminders about respect for school property and proactive outreach to discourage similar behaviors—to protect learning spaces and support a safe school environment.

Coordination of TB Testing

I participated in the Building Admin Team meeting focused on TB response as part of my administration internship, helping develop protocols to protect both student privacy and building safety. I worked with administrators to define standards for identifying and notifying exposed individuals, coordinating initial and follow‑up testing with the county health department, and establishing clear roles for school staff during the testing process. My responsibilities included drafting communication templates that balanced confidentiality with transparency, organizing voluntary staff testing opportunities, and ensuring logistical needs (testing locations, supervision, and recordkeeping) were in place so the process ran smoothly and respectfully.

Recognizing gaps in our early response, I advocated for a more proactive, digestible communication approach to prevent confusion and calm fears—recommending prewritten messages, a single point of contact for health updates, and a clear timeline for testing and follow‑up. I also pushed for a formalized building plan for future epidemics that includes rapid-notification procedures, partnerships with public health, and staff training on operational roles. My contributions aimed to move the team from reactive measures to a structured, sustainable response model that protects health, preserves confidentiality, and maintains instructional continuity.
